영어의 'with'에 대응된다는 점 때문에 도구격(instrumental case)과 혼동되는 경우가 있으며
영어 이외의 많은 언어에서 동반의 의미와 도구의 의미를 같은 격으로 표현하는 경우가 있다.
동반격은 '~과 함께'의 의미를 표현하며 도구격은 '~으로'의 의미를 표현한다는 점에서 다르다.

에스토니아어의 예를 들면 다음과 같다. -ga로 동반격을 표시한다.
